2008 UMP Sportsman Rules
· CHASSIS
Any US manufactured full frame or uni-body chassis allowed, with a minimum wheel base of one hundred eight (108) inches. Tube chassis are allowed with one hundred eight (108) wheel base. If coil suspension is used, chassis must retain outer frame rail back to and including stock rear spring pockets and trailing arm mounts. If leaf spring suspension is used, uni-body or full frame must retain complete front clip. No front wheel drive allowed. The only cars allowed to run with less than one hundred eight (108) inch wheel base are the new style Camaros with one hundred one (101) inch stock wheel base. These cars must retain complete, stock front and rear suspension. Uni-body cars may have sub-frames tied together with tubing. Stock frame rails may be inlaid with tubing. All cars must weigh 2800 lbs., with driver, after the completion of the race.
· ROLL CAGE
A competition type, 4 point roll cage is required and must be constructed with tubing at least one and one half (1 1/2) inches diameter, with at least .095 wall. A minimum of three (3) horizontal bars are required in the driver’s door. A minimum of three (3) horizontal bars are required between the driver and the right side of the car. Three (3) driver protection bars are required in the windshield, ahead of the driver. Rear hoops are required for protection of the fuel cell and must be tied into the roll cage. A front hoop, tied to the main cage is also highly recommended. Front and rear hoops, or bars, must be inside of grill and trunk panel and must not be visible on the outside of the car.
· BODY
All glass, chrome trim and upholstery must be removed. Tops may be removed to install roll cage. Tops, hoods and rear deck lids may be steel, fiberglass or aluminum. Stock appearing steel and aluminum bodies will be allowed. Body parts may be stock or fabricated from sheet steel and/or aluminum. All body parts must closely resemble stock panels. No lips on bodies or nose pieces. All side panels must be flush with the rest of the body throughout the body line. Side panels cannot be taller than hood or trunk lines. No flanges or lips on roof supports. The rear valence area (back of the car) may be open. The body of the car must be a minimum of six (6) inches off the ground. The front sub-frame, engine and body must be manufactured by the same corporate manufacturer (i.e. GM to GM, Ford to Ford, etc.) No bars or objects are allowed outside the body or bumpers, except a boot bar on the front. Spoilers are limited to an eight (8) inch maximum and are recommended to be made of clear material. The spoiler supports are not to extend higher than the spoiler. This dimension will be measured from the trunk deck to the tip of the material. The side supports can be ten (10) inches long, measured from the bottom forward. Bumpers may be stock, or fabricated from tubing, but they must be rolled or capped on the ends. All cars with stock appearing after-market or fabricated bodies will be required to have the correct after-market nose piece that corresponds with the year, make and model of the body (i.e. Monte Carlo body with Monte Carlo nose piece, or 1970-1981 Camaro body with 1970-1981 Camaro nose piece). An after-market rear bumper cover is optional. No wedge nose pieces allowed on any cars. All cars with stock, OEM fenders and OEM quarter panels will be allowed to use any stock appearing nose piece. Firewalls and floorboards must completely enclose the driver’s compartment. No open holes in firewall are allowed. Interior decking is allowed. No Lexan or Plexiglas windows are allowed.
· SUSPENSION
The stock steering box must remain in the stock location for the year and make of the frame. No chain or center steering allowed. No aluminum components allowed, other than lowering blocks. Weight jacks are permitted on the front and rear. The front suspension must be stock OEM and in the stock location. Tubular upper A-frames are allowed and can be moved. The driver’s seat and steering must be located left of the driveshaft. Steering quickeners are allowed. Shock absorbers may be mounted in any location, limited to one shock absorber per wheel. The rear suspension must be made up of stock OEM components. No link rear suspension (i.e. two (2), three (3) or four (4) length tubes). Heim joints are allowed. No traction devices, such as coil-over shocks, lift bars, pull bars, slide boxes, fiberglass leaf springs, panhard bars, etc. are allowed. Composite leaf springs may be used. All cars with one hundred eight (108) inch, or longer wheel base with Chevelle frames, GM metric frames or Ford frames that were equipped with rear coil springs may convert to leaf springs. No other cars are allowed to convert from coil to leaf springs, or leaf to coil springs. Suspension must be stock for year, make and model of the frame. Late model Camaros are allowed to run the stock, factory torque arm.
· REAR ENDS AND BRAKES
Any passenger car rear end with after market axles or 9″ floater rear end will be allowed. No quick change rear ends allowed. Rear end may be locked with a spool or the spider gears may be welded. No aluminum driveshafts allowed. All brake calipers must be stock OEM calipers. No dual piston or aluminum calipers are allowed. Dual master cylinders with brake bias are allowed. No single disc brake rotors are allowed. No drilled brake rotors are allowed.
· TIRES & WHEELS
Only steel racing wheels may be used. No aluminum or mag wheels are allowed. Maximum wheel width is eight (8) inches. Beadlocks are allowed on any tire. One (1) inch lug nuts are mandatory. Hoosier will be the track tires and will be the same as UMP Modified. No tire grooving allowed. Siping is allowed.
· ENGINE & DRIVETRAIN
No traction timing devices are allowed. If engine is set back, number one (1) spark plug must be in line with, or in front of, the centerline of the upper ball joint. No aluminum blocks or cylinder heads are allowed. Only one (1) four (4) barrel carburetor may be used. No fuel injection, turbochargers, superchargers, nitrous oxide, electric fuel pumps, dry sump systems or magnetos are allowed. Accusumps can be used. Aluminum intakes and headers are allowed. Headers must not pass through the driver’s compartment. Exhaust must exit away from the track surface. Any stock or racing transmission can be used, except quick change transmissions and drive couplers.
· MISCELLANEOUS
No computers, radios, transmitting or receiving devices are allowed. Racing brake pedals and hydraulic clutch pedals are allowed. Tow chains are mandatory on the front and rear of the car and must be capable of supporting the weight of the car. Driveshaft hoops are required within twelve (12) inches of the front u-joint. All driveshafts must be painted white and are to remain white throughout the season. All batteries that are mounted inside the driver’s compartment must be completely enclosed in a marine type box, with a lid, and mounted securely. All ballast weight must be mounted securely to the frame or roll cage with a minimum of two (2) one-half (1/2) inch bolts. All weights are to be painted white and must have your car number on them. If weights are not properly marked with the car number, the car will be weighed without the weights. The minimum vehicle weight, with driver, is 2800 lbs. All cars are to be clearly and neatly lettered with the car numbers at least twenty-four (24) inches high on both sides and the top of the car. The car number must also be on the front and rear of the car. The car number must stand out from other lettering on the car. If you know that there is another car with the same number as yours, you may want to add a letter. If there is another car with the same number as yours, you may be asked to add a “X”. The top five (5) finishers in all races must weigh.
· SAFETY
Driver side window nets are highly recommended. A competition seat, with a five (5) point safety harness is required. An approved Snell 85 helmet and complete fire suit, with fireproof gloves, fireproof shoes and neck collar, are required. Fuel cells are required and are to be securely mounted with a minimum of two (2), two (2) inch by one-eighth (1/8) inch steel strapping. No fuel filters are allowed inside the car. Fuel lines that pass through the car must be in steel tubing. A firewall is required between the driver’s compartment and the fuel cell. All seats must be securely mounted to the roll cage. Fiberglass seat bolts must be a minimum of three-eighths (3/8) inch diameter and must use washers that are a minimum of one and one-half (1 1/2) inches wide. Aluminum seats are strongly recommended. All lap belts and shoulder harnesses must be securely mounted to the roll cage with bolts that are a minimum of three-eighths (3/8) inch in diameter.
· NOTICE TO ALL DRIVERS & CAR OWNERS
No equipment that has passed through technical inspection unobserved will be considered as having been approved. It is the responsibility of the car owner and driver to be sure that the car is legal. If you have any questions, be sure to ask a track official. All cars are subject to weekly technical inspection. There will be no refund of any admission, pit or entry fees if a car fails to pass technical inspection. Since rules may not cover every incident that may occur, the decision of the track promoter and/or technical inspector will be considered final. If you are asked to make changes to your car, the changes must be made immediately. Please don’t ask if the car can be run as-is. If a car should be found to be illegal at the end of a race, all monies, trophies and earned points will be forfeited.
All drivers are responsible for the actions of their pit crews. Any activity that is deemed to be poor conduct will result in the driver, car owner and crew member being suspended for a period of time established by the track promoter. In addition, a fine not exceeding one thousand (1,000) dollars must be paid prior to re-instatement.
The rules and/or regulations established herein are designed to establish minimum, acceptable requirements for a racing event and provide for the orderly conduct of these racing events. These rules shall govern the condition of all racing events. All participants, through participation in these racing events are expected to comply with these rules and regulations.
These rules and regulations are intended to be used as a guide for the conduct of the sport and are in no way a guarantee against death and/or injury to a participant, spectator or official. As such, no expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from the publication of, or compliance with these rules and/or regulations.
The race promoter shall be empowered to permit minor deviation from any of the specifications herein, or impose any further restrictions that, in his sole opinion, do not alter the minimum, acceptable requirements. No expressed or implied warranty of safety shall result from such alteration of these specifications. Any and all interpretation of or deviation from these rules and regulations is left to the discretion of the track officials and their decision/s will be final.
· SPECIAL NOTE
No alcoholic beverages or drugs are allowed. Any driver found to be under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will face immediate suspension from all activities concerning Kamp Motor Speedway for a period of time set forth by the track promoter.
